Hi there
I am trying to perfect my mixing, by mixing in key.
There's a program called "Mixed in Key".
I've read reviews about it and would like to try it, but there's no trial version.
has anyone got a copy of it / serial for it?
cheers

Don't ask people for serial numbers. BAD form.
Try this software, it's free and will do all you want:
Rapid Evolution

I have a problem with mixed in key. They false advertise that it is 95% correct and all these big wig djs write these good reviews when I'm sure none of them have ever taken the time to test the product.
In my experience mixed in key is at most 50% - 60% accurate.
I highly recommend mixshare rapid evolution if your going to use software to key your tracks. I support these guys because they provide a superior product (exception of the interface) that can get 70% of the keys correct and the best thing of all "Its Free"
At the end of the day software keying is not accurate enough for me.. but I do call on software for a second opinion on those hard to key tracks.

Mixed in Key and Rapid Evolution are equal. Both have their problems.
Mixed in Key costs money and Rapid Evolution works but looks like crap and has issues on Macs.

I use both, I find it most handy when mixin house as mixes generally are longer. Be sure to use it as a guide rather than building your whole set around it, unless you have 1000s of tunes because at the end of the day the quality of a song/mix will be noticed by the crowd, not the fact that the key remain the same or related, again....it will matter if the keys are clashing...ouch!!

doesnt this software defeat the whole object of the djing process? ok "stand out like a dog dick" key clash is not nice, but what about the clash key that comes in on a wierd harmony key??
guess we will soon have software to keep the beat the same and have our songs organised in the ones with this sound.
Sorry i dont subscribe to it, course nothing against the ones using it!!

Mixed in key is barely 60% acurate. I know because i have someone's dj catlogue, which was ALL scanned with mixed in key.
However when i listen to a song from this persons library myself, and figure out what the bass line / melody on a keyboard (piano) is, I find that the scale is in a different key that what Mixed in key says.
However, it often will get CLOSE to labeling a tune correctly. For example, it may label a tune in G minor (6A) as 7A instead which is d minor. The minor scale of D is very similar and relative to G, so when you mix it with another "close but not completely accurate" identified tune from mixed in key like , chances are, it will sound good, and will mix melodically for the most part...or it will sound like garbage.
There are many times when mixed in key is WAY off. thats why i will never use it.
So if you got the ear, use it, and better yet, label your tunes after IDentifying them by ear so you KNOW the key for sure. grab a cheap keyboard from a music store or get a vst...
or you can go here:

No, harmonic mixing is just another trick in a bag, I have all of my trance tunes done by keys, there are 3 advantages of harmonic mixing/mixing in keys:
- You can extend your mixes to be longer because the melodies can overlap without clashing
- The mixing seems smoother and flows better
- you can use keys to your advantage if you want to raise or lower energy, technically
You still have to mix, just gotta avoid the keys clashing 'cause then it really sounds bad, most useful genres to use this for are trance and funky house

Play along to a song. Figure out the bass line. The bass line is the best indication of a songs key signature. -Take a theory class or piano lessons if you are interested, they help to aquaint most people to scales and key signatures.
Check the link i posted in my previous post, and you wont need to buy a keyboard.

Quite possibly the most ignorant statement on this forum.
Please, not another word.
Do I even need to explain the insanity of the quote above?

damn i'm no braniac here but i do have to agree that that comment is quite retarded.......
yeah high life i checked out that page but also there's a piano that is provided with the rapid evolution software:)
but i was wondering though cause most tunes are written in a certain chord for example and from what i know chords usually consists of a couple of a few notes??? aren't i right on that one at least?????
if i'm klincking away with a mouse how's that gonna help me at all????
