NI Traktor Scratch 3 vs Rane Serato Thu May 17, 2007 10:11 am

So the latest version of Traktor is about to drop (or maybe already has?) And I'm interested in getting it or Serato.

I've used Ableton since v3, and I feel restricted as a DJ using Live to "DJ"

I don't really have the time to set up big Live sets, (as much as I would like to) so that's another area I think needs attention from Ableton

So what do recommend people?

my friend uses serato and I use TORQ, from what I've gathered on watching him theyare pretty simular programs. I mainly use TORQ because a good friend of mine works with m-audio and is my go to guy if I need any support with what I'm trying to do, plus his emp. discount was nice icon_biggrin.gif I know that w/ torq all your ableton files load right up in it with a click of a button and serato works with your itunes but I'm sure you wouldnt have a problem doing that with any program...I hate to say I dont know much about traktor. The one thing that I do know is that set-up in a club is a little time consuming, this being if the dj before you wasn't set up for the digital aspect. You have to run RCA's to interfaces, change your inputs, hook up your laptop blah blah blah...

I wish i could be more helpfull on all this, but I think set-up is pretty much your biggest problem, as far as what program can do what...I think they are all pretty much equal, just depends on what prefference of visual projection is easier for YOU to use

This is a PM I sent a chap over on MS. Should help you out.

FYI, talking about Traktor Scratch First.

First off, the interface is by far the best on the market. It uses Cirrus converters and that's just unheard of in DJ equipment! it samples at 96k/24bit.

Another good thing is that it's all being built by NI, no third party involved anywhere. So they have been able to implement a number of features. The best one in my opinion is that you can run it through Ableton and use Ableton as you master clock, PLUS you can also run VSTs in Traktor Scratch itself. Custom effects anyone? Not only can you customize your effects, but you can use automation to record your movments to make effects even more dynamic and alive.

I've had mine for a bit now (friend works for NI so I got a 'demo' copy = p) and I really can't see anything wrong with it at the moment. Haven't played out with it yet but once I get the feel and trust myself with it more than I'll be taking it out.

But it's still new, and I'm not sure how often they are going to be putting out updates for it like Rane has for Serato. That's one of the reasons I went with Serato because they actually listen to what their users suggest and try to implement them.

Traktor Scratch is by far the superior product at the moment in terms of quality.

If you just use Serato as a record box than by all means no need to get Traktor, but if you have thought about using Ableton to SUPPORT your DJ set than by all means Traktor is the way to go.

Since you already use Ableton I would say get Traktor Scratch but that's me.

Cheers and best of luck!

now that's the sort of insight that I'm after - good to know, and it seems like Traktor might be the way to go.

cheers mang

Dude, Stanton and NI ended their relationship so there is no more Final Scratch. That's why NI went and did Traktor Skratch. It's all first party and the interface is to simply die for.

Go sell Serato and Traktor Scratch this instant.

Traktor Skratch is out. I've have it and so do a few other people I told to get it and they haven't been let down yet.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Native-Instruments-TRAKTOR-SCRATCH?sku=700927

There you go. Sell Serato for 350-400 (Running price on ebay) and then pay the rest for Traktor.

Did you not read my review about it on the first page?

It's been discontinued for one so there are going to be no more updates or new versions coming out. The interface is of poor quality when compaired to Serato and Traktor Skratch.

Those are the two big ones I'd say.

# You must have bought Serato Scratch Live before the beginning of the crossgrade offer period (May 1st).
# The special TRAKTOR SCRATCH Crossgrade package must have been purchased up until the 31st May. Even if you own the Crossgrade packet you still need to ensure you are eligible for the crossgrade offer.

No idea when he got Serato but it seems to late to get the crossgrade deal.

serato user here.

my bug upset with rane serato is the audio breakdown( into digital)

its horrible if you are into turntableism, and the lack of built in efx.

not everyone can afford a rane ttmsl just to utilize the efx funtions that are available with it.

which is why i give traktor scratch a bow.

but serato is soo straight forward with the program, first day i got on it it was super comfortable. and now that serato 1.80 features midi capabilities the future holds much for ranes soft/hardware interface.

its hard to actally sit down and decide on the one you want to purchase, just find one with the features you like and stick with it.

since im using a djm600 and soon to be 800 for MIDI, the built in efx on traktor dont impress me much.

so i stick with serato, its a club standard interface that has never failed me once.

i hear m audio is a nightmare on leopard?
