im a newcomer to using abelton but i want to start using it in conjuction with decks in my sets

what im looking to do is have my decks on 2 channels and then have abelton running on 2 channels aswell

what do i need to setup abelton to run off my djm so that i can use it with two channels on my djm

i know i need and external soundcard for my laptop but im not sure what type of one ill need, do i just need one with usb connection to connect the laptop to the soundcard and then midi connection from soundcard to djm

am i missing something there?

You need a Soundcard (Internal, USB or Firewire) with 4 mono outputs (1+2 for one channel and 3+4 for the 2nd channel on your Mixer). Otherwise you wont be able to put the sound out in stereo to your mixer.

This is what I use:

Check this Video Tutorial out. It show you a cool simple way of Warping (preparing) your tracks for Beat mixing in Ableton and how to set up your Ableton and Soundcard for mixing on your external Mixer:

I also use Fast Track Pro, it should work perfectly fine for this setup.

Yes warping can be a pain, but only if you are trying to warp VINYL RIPS. If you are warping purely digital files, it should not be very difficult. I have gotten it down to the point where I can easily warp a track in a live setting, on the fly.. in just under 20 to 30 seconds I can drop 6 to 8 warp markers and have a track ready to go.

If you are transfering your vinyl over to mp3 or WAV, however.. your experience will be a lot different. Also, different genres of music are tougher to warp. House/techno is simple!

Were these purchased or shared tracks? 320kbps?

Every once in awhile you will run across a track which has some issues with the timing, but these are generally the same tracks which would be hard to keep in time on CDJs or vinyl as well - an issue that occurs in the production or mastering process.

But usually, with most house tunes, once you have placed the 1.1.1 marker in the proper spot, it should be simple to place a marker once every 16 bars, to guarantee you have a tight warp throughout the track. There are some producers out there whom just have a tendency to produce using lots of loops - like Radio Slave - most of his tracks you can easily place a marker at 1.1.1 and then go right to the last beat and warp from there, and the whole track is warped perfectly.

Practice makes perfect!
