The mysterious Oxygen Breathing Apparatus is finally revealed. OBA is simply the creation of me, Jeremy Watkins. Realized in 2001, OBA was an outlet for me to exhaust the demons swirling around in my head. (Not really, but as a creative outlet).
Originally from the San Francisco Bay area, that's where I first took to the decks during the mid-80's electronic explosion and fledgling Hip-hop movement. I started a B-Boy crew called the "Bomb Squad". Everybody in the crew specialized in some form of Hip-Hop Art. Mine was Graffiti Art and Dj'ing. As the music from those days progressed, so did I. Naturally I moved into more electronic and new-wave sounds, then found myself where I needed to be at that moment in my life. Gothic. I was listening to bands like Sisters of Mercy and Dead Can Dance (years before the dance music exploitation of Lisa Gerrard's haunting vocals), while always keeping an ear to the street for fresh sounds to come out.
That's where I discovered house music. Having frequented many underground clubs in San Francisco back in those days, they were always missing "something". I wasn't sure what that something was until my first "rave". I remember walking through the doors and looking across the sea of bodies, I said to myself, "this is it!" There is where my passion was nailed down and it was decided that that is where I want to be.
Too many stories about sex, drugs, and, well, house music to mention from those days, today I am a family man with a career in the US Navy. I have a son Noah (hence, "Noah's Ark" on Bedrock Black) and daughter Sahara. Since I have been in the Navy I have traveled extensively throughout the world and lived in Southern Spain for a number of years. All the while, refining the OBA sound to what it is today. Deep, dark and funky. That's how I do it.
Now residing in Seattle, Washington, I am broadening my producing horizons by working on number of different projects, including my downtempo project as my altered ego, "Obscure Devices". Also, 2006 will see the kick off of our new label "Cerulean Recordings" with partner and audio-tech mastermind Jeff Aldritch. With a number of new signings, remixes, and radio shows, and a move back to Southern Spain, the future of OBA shines bright through 2006 and into the future.
