Open Records
(Cairns, Australia)
open-records.net
Open Records is a progressive, techno, minimal music label intended to create a base for Australian electronic music, artists & DJs on the international stage. Founded in the lush tropical paradise of Cairns in 2006- we have expanded to include representatives in the major dance centers of Australia & across the world such as Greece, Spain, France, Finland, Israel & New Zealand to name a few.
The Open Records sound is not categorized by genre-definitions or beatport catagories. It takes elements from a broad range of electronic styles, including progressive house, trance, techno, electro, tribal & minimal- winding them together with a characteristic deep rhythmic groove, spacious atmospheres, hypnotic bass-grooves & focus on intelligent, cutting-edge musicality & production.
The beginning of year saw the release of our second full-length compilation, Festivus compiled by label founders Suspekt & Woodsman. Featuring renowned artists such as Wombat (a new project from Australian master producer SunControlSpecies), RPO, Fiord (aka Antix), D-Sens and U & K (Tero Civill Remix) alongside rising stars Urban Monkeys, 2Kings in Motion, Eegor, GMJ, David Weed and Embark- Festivus was a strong return to form for Open in 2008.
After Festivus, Open is releasing monthly through beatport, with Fiord and GMJ EPs out at the start of September. So far the tracks are receiving great feedback and are both charting in the Progressivehouse.com Top 20. There are also releases in the pipeline from artists like Kasey Taylor, Wombat, Solead, Urban Monkeys, Spikers, Interpulse and and many more.
As well as our ever- increasing artist roster, we have a strong team of Australian DJ talent which all offer their own interpretation of the Open Records sound. This allows us to perform in a variety of applications, while still maintaining a tight label network that stretches up and down the entire East Coast of the country.
We also host a monthly club night in our hometown of Cairns at Cadence Nightclub, one of the city's premier indoor venues. So far we have hosted respected acts such as Lutzenkirchen, Dousk, Kasey Taylor and Fiord among others, establishing it as one of the biggest and most respected underground dance nights in Far North Queensland.
Open Records will continue to strive to bring the very best in electronic dance music to both Australia & the world. Our simple philosophy of “music-first” ensures every project we embark on is of the highest standard, paving the way for our strong base of talent to leave their mark on the international stage.
Open Records – forward-thinking progressive music for the festival dancefloor.
Open & Out.

OPNDG004 GMJ - Torgant EP (Sep 4th, 2008)

Deep from the sounds of the Melbourne underground comes the next release on Open Records of renowned DJ Gavin Martin under his alias GMJ.
After the success of his first 2 releases on Bus and Open Records, Gavin has been busy in the studio signing tracks to labels like Vapour, Segment, System and Resurgent Records.
The Torgant EP represents a diverse range of electronic music styles and will again show why GMJ is becoming a name to watch in progressive and techno
music.
Kicking the EP off is the massive grooves of the title track Torgant, an epic tribal monster suited to festival dancefloors in classic Open style.
The grinding techno of the vector remix under Gavin’s other moniker Fulcrum provides an alternative, favoring a driving, percussive approach with mechanical rhythms and a slamming bottom-end.
Following on is the B-side, the hypnotic progressive techno of Curious Calm.
Combining layering rhythms, washed out pads and deep pulsing basslines, the track has already seen strong reviews and support from DJs across the globe.
Rounding the EP off is the deep tech-house edit of Curious Calm by France’s D-Sens.
Glitchy sounds, lazy atmospherics and sub-bass frequencies make this perfect for the twilight hours and a fitting end to a diverse release from Open Records and one of Australia’s best new producers.
Gavin has plenty more up his sleeve, so make sure you keep your eyes and ears peeled for more sounds from the GMJ studios in the not-too-distant future.
We hope you enjoy!

Australia’s up and coming progressive label, Open Records unleashes this pack of promising tech and prog tunes from Melbourne’s Gavin Martin, aka GMJ, with a great rework by French producer, D-Sens, via the “Torgant EP.”
On the A side, Torgant’s sound selection didn’t really pique my interest and the track could use some more production tricks (e.g. delays, drum fills, filter sweeps) to break it up, as it’s a little monotonous. Although, I did like th.... 3/5 [Tom Solo]
