OMB - Flying Through Tokyo & Ant Model (Acute Recordings)
Release Date:
Reviewed: 9/10

Following tracks from Habersham and Pat Foosheen amongst others, Acute reach their eighth release courtesy of Tokyo-based DJ and producer Daisuke Yamagishi, aka OMB. Having released tracks on Silver Planet, 3 Beat and Audio Therapy, OMB returns with probably his finest work yet.

‘Flying Over Tokyo’ is an epic monster, built around a throbbing bassline so deep it probably registers on the Richter scale! Foregoing the obvious big riffs of many similar progressive tracks, OMB constructs the melody from subtle chords, pads and sweeps. The result is no less effective however, as support from Hernan Cattaneo, Moshic and Chris Fortier proves.

‘Ant Model’ on the b-side does not quite reach the heights of ‘Flying Over Tokyo’ but is not something to be skipped over. The dark atmospherics created by the growling bassline and heavily fx-ed vocals, backed by twisted percussion, are pervasive, while an acidic synth punctuates the break and the latter half of the track.

Both these tracks are superbly constructed – the attention to detail is second to none. But more importantly, the epic nature of ‘Flying Through Tokyo’ and the twisted, almost psychedelic, feel of ‘Ant Model’ make the tracks stand out, whether it be during a trip to the local record shop or at 3am in the morning in a sweaty club. Quality stuff.
