Chris Cargo - Cityscape (Renaissance)
Release Date:
Reviewed: 7/10

After the very disappointing ‘Chunkafunk’ on Choo Choo, Chris Cargo switches over to the rapidly expanding Renaissance stable for his next latest offering.

‘Cityscape’ retains Cargo’s distinctive sound – tough, tribal basslines and minimal percussion. The track is a little slow to get going, only springing to life when the breakdown hits at the 3-minute mark. Here, heavy pads sweep across the frequencies while synths, tinged with a hint of acid, create a nice hook. Percussion is added before the bassline kicks in and the track rolls on. Another similar, but shorter, breakdown punctuates the latter half of the track.

The unnamed remix takes the top honours on this release. It features a crisper, punchier bassline and more melody, courtesy of fx-ed synths. A short breakdown of atmospheric pads provides a brief respite before the bassline kicks back in and the track rolls to a conclusion.

A decent release from Renaissance and Chris Cargo, blending tribal basslines and progressive atmospherics. Worth a listen.
