Danny Bonnici - Return To Saturn (Hiddenform)
Release Date: May 0th, 2006
Reviewed: 7/10

One thing that puzzles me about musical collaborations between two producers is how, if the duo write a ‘big’ track, one of the two gets the majority of the plaudits. I get the feeling that Danny Bonnici got a bit of a raw deal out of ‘Ride’, his collaboration with Luke Chable. Nothing to do with Luke Chable, who is a fantastic producer in his own right, but a track as enormous as ‘Ride’ should really have thrust Bonnici into the limelight more than it did. Anyway, that is history; today we are presented with two solo productions from Danny Bonnici on new label Hiddenform.

‘Return To Saturn’ has already appeared on the aforementioned Luke Chable’s Audio Therapy CD and finally gets a vinyl release. The track begins with some soft, nearly silent percussion before a restrained kick appears. Grooving along, enhanced by subtle, shimmering melodies and keys, the track remains a largely circumspect affair. It would have been nice to see it let of it’s leash, either late in the original or in a remix, but ‘Return To Saturn’ has enough about it to keep ears focussed.

‘GL2’ on the b-side is a quirky number, full of sharp percussion work that twists and turns to form the melody. Hard to see where this would fit into a set but there remains a certain je ne sais qoui about it that makes it hard to ignore.

Hiddenform’s debut release is fair. ‘Return To Saturn’ won’t set the world on fire but it is a decent progressive track with enough of a hint of craziness to make it stand out from the crowd.
