Federico Epis - Natalia (Acute Recordings)
Release Date:
Reviewed: 8/10

DJ Federico Epis has been floating around the South American scene for over ten years now, with gigs at some the continent’s highest profile clubs already on his Curriculum Vitae. More recently, he has been concentrating on his work in the studio and has seen tracks signed to Swift, Dubcoast, Fiberline Audio and, of course, Acute.

The original mix of ‘Natalia’ is a driving, mid-set progressive track. Tinged with shimmering chords and melodies, it rides a fairly dark beat before reaching a breakdown that is filled with a heavily-accented vocal. The main piano hook returns at the culmination of the break and at this point it really comes into its own. Simple yet effective, it is the sort of riff that is likely to stick in your head for some time to come. If anything, it deserves even more prominence than it has been given, but nevertheless, it stands tall here and is complimented by plenty of other production tricks that roll together to create an excellent groove.

Greece’s DJ Tim and Andi Vasilos provide the remix to complete this package. They initially move ‘Natalia’ down a slightly electro route with rough-sounding stabs and synths offsetting the more progressive elements of the original. However, by the mid-point of the remix the riffs from the original are in full flight and we find ourselves in the midst of a strong proggy workout. The vocal does not feature but there is enough about the track to keep things interesting without it.

A more than reasonable release here from Acute. The original is definitely the stronger of the two but DJ Tim and Andi Vasilos’ rework introduces some interesting new elements.
