Jacob Todd & Jordan Nafie - Ariadne's Thread
(Emote)
Release Date:
Reviewed: 9/10
Jacob Todd is a New Yorker known for the release of quality proggy breaks for labels such as M Theory, 3 Beat Breaks and Babylon. His style is pretty unique and therefore this new release from Emote Music was something I was eager to listen to. I also noticed that Todd and Nafie had worked together previously, releasing 'Malta' in December on Parabolic Records; a track that was well received by progressive DJs around the globe. This time the track resulting from their collaboration is called "Ariadne's Thread", a title based on a Greek myth and that is too long of a story to talk about here! Now, as far as the musical result of the time and effort these two spent in the studio is concerned, we can say that ambient proggy breaks is the menu du jour.
First off is the original version of the track; a chilled-out atmospheric piece of prog/breaks mash-up with very nice soundscapes flying around creating a strong emotive track. It has all the elements of a deep, dark-tipped masterpiece if you ask me. It evokes a lot of hidden feelings and certainly captivates ones attention. Top notch prog/breaks and believe me it has been a while since I heard something that deep in this genre.
Remixes come courtsey of Habersham and OBA. Remixing this little gem is certainly a difficult task. Habersham has shown a well kept tendency towards more minimal and internal sounds and he certainly gives this track a facelift. Some fluid, liquid sounds, a cut-up breathing vocal, a unified drum/bass section and some quirky sounds with a haunting bassline make this remix stand out on its own. It gets kind of repetitive at times but a much needed breakdown puts it all back in place. This remix doesn't lack in atmosphere but is definitely a peak-time gem for all minimal techno sets. And we're talking serious minimal techno, dark, sweaty and vibrant.
OBA takes it to the more straight 4/4 deep prog territory and his work is quite satisfying for the listener although those hi-hats do sound a bit too upfront in my humble opinion. Very nice for early mornig situations where the positive vibes are very much present but certainly the weakest track of the three. Not weak on its own, just has to be compared with the other two modern day gems.
I was totally taken in this release and can say that I consider myself lucky to be able to hear such quality music. Certainly a release that will fortify the names of Jacob Todd and Jordan Nafie (and, of course, the young wizard Habersham) and will give a boost to newcomer in my book, OBA. Astonishing and essential for everybody. Period.
