Parlange - Ocean Drive (Omnis Recordings)
Release Date: June 0th, 2006
Reviewed: 8/10

Mexican DJ and producer Parlange has been steadily building a reputation for himself. Gigs across Central America in support of Infusion, Chris Fortier and John Digweed, to name a few, plus his well-received ‘Return To Mars’ EP, have brought him to the attention of DJs and punters alike. Here he teams up with Jonathan Ojeda’s Omnis label to bring you ‘Ocean Drive’.

Parlange’s varied style is on display with the original mix. While previous tracks have been of the deeper progressive variety, Parlange’s ode to Miami borrows elements from more mainstream genres. While the groove is still deep, housey stabs and electro effects roll through the track to broaden its appeal. Well-structured and tightly produced, it is easy to see this fitting into a variety of situations.

The Chadwick Strange remix is notable for its simplicity, without ever feeling lightweight on the production front. A chugging groove pervades the entire piece, created by a deep bassline and swirling, acidy stabs that build constantly. A short vocal clip resonates sporadically while the acidy sounds take hold in the middle portion of the track and thrust the listener through to the conclusion.

Boshell & Cody provide the last remix and also stick to a progressive path. Again the vocal flits in and out of the mix while incessant, high frequency strings wail like the siren on an ambulance, creating an air of urgency. A breakdown punctuates the heart of the track with a clever percussive build up and syncopated kick. The deep, repetitive theme then continues as the main kick returns.

Two very progressive remixes complement the housey elements of the original on this solid offering from Omnis. It is difficult to decide which of the three tracks on offer is the best as they are all worthy of equal acclaim.
