Luke Chable & Danny Bonnici - Hiddenform 001 (Hiddenform)
Release Date: September 0th, 2006
Reviewed: 8/10

Luke Chable and Danny Bonnici’s first collaboration together resulted in the monstrous ‘Ride’; out in 2003, it is perhaps the last truly progressive ‘anthem’ that has been released. The duo also crossed paths on ‘One Day’, a huge vocal track written by Chable, Bonnici and his pals in the NuBreed group. This is their first mix compilation together and it appears courtesy of the Hiddenform imprint.

The mix kicks off with a distinctly electro flavour in the form of Daniel Taylor’s ‘Ur Ears’ and John Morgan & Kevin Shu’s ‘Acid Brownies’. The vocals of Each ‘Broken Bitch’ cover much of the same ground as the unique sounds of PQM’s ‘You Are Sleeping’ but the track is laden with fuzzy synths and percussion. Brisker & Magitman’s ‘Feel Me’ leaves a slightly more progressive taste; a theme that is built on by D-Nox’s excellent ‘Sevenhours’, a track that is awash with heavy industrial effects but that manages to maintain plenty of groove. The enormous strings and infectious keys of Lifelike & Chris Menace ‘Discopolis’ provide the most ‘commercial’ track of the compilation but it provides a welcome shift of emphasis at the CD’s midpoint and refreshes the ears ready for the second half.

Rolling breaks rip through the speakers in the form of Lostep’s ‘Little Peaking’, punctuated by the track’s bleeps and squeaks that form a cacophony of madness. Kalle M ‘Dom’ is as abstract as we have come to expect from the Finn. The compilation ends with two pieces by the compilers: Danny Bonnici’s ‘Break Da House’ with its sparkling keys; and Luke Chable’s ‘Swedish Meatballs (I Don’t Know)’.

Apart from Lifelike & Chris Menace ‘Discopolis’ and, to a lesser extent, Lostep ‘Little Peaking’, this compilation is devoid of what you would call ‘big’ tunes. But that by no means makes it a bad compilation. There is enough here to keep the attention of prog, electro and breaks fans; one of those compilations where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
