Various - Ibiza: The Sound Of Renaissance Vol 3 (Renaissance)
Release Date:
Reviewed: 7/10

Another week, another Renaissance compilation. This time it is the third in the Ibiza: Sound of Renaissance series and it is spread over two CDs; Disc 1 is entitled ‘Beach’; Disc 2 is ‘Club’. So no awards for originality but let’s talk music.

Beach, as you would expect, full of tracks meant to reflect the beach bars and cafes of Ibiza. Early highlights include Deadliy Avenger’s remix of Granddad Bob ‘Hide Me’, a dizzying trip through furious strings and emotive vocals. The track’s incessant violin, coupled with syncopated beats and a soft piano riff is hypnotising and lifts the track head and shoulders above its neighbours on this CD. Other inclusions of note include a Groove Armada’s ‘Never, Never, Never’ collaboration with Shirley Bassey, where the dubby percussion work creates a result less cheesy than one would expect. The dub theme continues with ‘Float Through Stars’ from Funky Lowlives while Coldcut use frantic snares, soft pads and John Matthias’ vocals to create an interesting fusion of styles with ‘Man In A Garage’. Frontera ‘Nature’ and Orbital’s seminal ‘Belfast’ add a slightly progressive feel to proceedings and help roll the CD to a mellow conclusion.

CD 2 kicks off with Phonique’s remix of Skye’s ‘What’s Wrong With Me’, a track brimming with funk and cute keys which leads smoothly into Claude Von Stroke ‘Who’s Afraid of Detriot’ which, as the name suggests, has more than a hint of techno to it. Some rather nondescript house numbers follow before the vocals of Tracy Thorn, best known for her work with Everything But The Girl, filter through on Tiefschwarz’s ‘Damage’ and Last Rhythm’s self-entitled track give the mix a new lease of life. Cult 45 ‘True 2 Life’ and James Zabiela ‘Weird Science’ add some quirkiness (perhaps too much quirkiness for this CDs target audience) before some more mainstream numbers round off the compilation.

Ibiza: Sound of Renaissance Vol 3 is nice enough and there are some very strong tracks, particularly on CD 1, but it is hard not to think that we have been here before; chill out CD followed by club disc. Ok, the formula works but how about pushing the boat out a little further next time?
