Be As Deep - Seasick (Emote)
Release Date:
Reviewed: 8/10

Be As Deep is one of the South America’s rising stars whose music has been gaining considerable support from the likes of Hernan Cattaneo and Anthony Pappa. ‘Seasick’ provides Jacob Todd’s Emote label with its fourth release.

The original mix of ‘Seasick’ is fairly tough by progressive standards with more than a hint of something tribal thrown in for good measure. Tight percussion work leads us into a short breakdown, after which the main beats kick us on through this lengthy (ten minute) track while atmospheric synths reverberate throughout the main section. Nice enough but perhaps lacking somewhat in structure – there isn’t really enough here to justify ten minutes of music.

Jacob Todd, as so often, takes the honours here with an excellent reinterpretation that is as driving as it is melodic. A simple kick pattern underpins the track while whirling synths filter quietly through the background, increasing in intensity as the piece progresses. Echoing keys and additional electric synths soon enter the fray, providing the main melody and backbone. The elements combine with the heady effect of mixing wine and spirits. Seasick indeed.

The quality continues for Emote as Jacob Todd turns a decent original into an excellent remix. The label, and Todd’s career, progress from strength to strength and we look forward to the next instalment.
