Darius Kohanim - Going Postal (Emote)
Release Date: October 0th, 2006
Reviewed: 8/10

Emote music continue their quest to become one of the most respected digital labels to have emerged during the last months. They seem to pursue quality and diversity and have already established a solid ground for a bright future. Jacob Tobb, owner of the label and producer of his own, is one of the most consistent “future-prog” lovers and his label's releases are being supported by key DJs of the next generation.

Release number 005 sees Darius Kohanim in control. He began his career as one third of Panopticon alongside Habersham and Ben McPherson, a trio that had some quite successful releases. His latest solo release is called 'Going Postal'. The drums are syncopated and carefully misplaced in order to create something distinguished that could make a non-connoisseur feel a little queasy at first. It’s a deep cut that is being carried all along by some background layers, its sub-baseline and some intriguing percussive work. The metallic-sounding swirling sounds that appear at some point do create a very hypnotic and eventually nightmarish atmosphere but its all good at the end of the day; a new-era prog sound that keeps you wanting more.

Now, every respected release has to be followed by a good remix. At the helms we have Naveen G; with releases for M-Theory, Yoshitoshi and Toes in the Sand already on his CV. He gives the track a more direct driving feel from the beginning with some weird electro-synth-like noises and some more classic prog drum patterns. This is more of a straight peak-time builder with an eye towards the more electrified times we live in. The drum programming is interesting to say the least with a change in direction that takes the track from its 4/4 basis towards a more electro/breaks sensation. This is a tough nut to crack but when cracked at the right time it can create a great deal of dance floor frenzy.

All in all, a good release from Emote, a label I ve come to respect and hopefully expect a continuity in the quality. Kohanim walks a path of his own with good effect but Naveen G gives the track a more dance floor friendly appeal, giving this release that extra something that is needed to get it out there on all good DJs' hard drives!
