Jacob Todd - Hollow
(Emote)
Release Date:
Reviewed: 8/10
Emote Music was founded by Jacob Todd in 2006 as an outlet for his music, and music from some other artists. Jacob Todd’s latest creation, 'Hollow', is certainly a track I was eager to get my hands (and ears) on, since I have been following his work very closely. Emote music has become a standardbearer for quality and innovation for me; and thus Jacob and Emote combined are certainly a pair to keep an eye open for.
It's only the sixth release from Emote but already I feel like this label has been here for ages. Speaking of ages, what Jacob delivers here is a track one could call ageless; it has the maturity of some golden track from the old school Detroit techno era (the more melodic renditions that is) in addition to a building bassline and some semi-melancholic synthesizers, all climaxing to a more heads down moment of pure techno energy while maintaining a progressive approach thanks to all the different layers that appear steadily. Beautiful stuff; as I mentioned before, ageless music.
Logiztik Sounds is Nicolas Silvano from Uruguay. Nicolas has quickly carved out a name for himself producing high quality progressive house and has received support from many a DJs including myself. He has provided two versions of 'Hollow' showing his diversified manner of remixing and his skills as a producer. In random order, I first listened to his experimental mix. He seems to have opted for something quite experimental (that's the point of an experimental mix, I guess!) with a drum extravaganza to start with. Nice rhythm though and when the synth lines join, it all makes sense. This is probably one of those tracks you can listen to any timem, any place. It has longevity written all over it. Those timeless emotional pads take the listener to a journey full of new inner discoveries. It all comes down to this: perfect proof that experimentation is no enemy of our beloved progressive house; when you put your soul on wax or (mp3 if you prefer), you are bound to create something close to a masterpiece.
Now, his other more straight and less bizarre version is leaning towards more electro-friendly paths due to a grimy, screaming electro bassline. The timeless pads are there but this time I think they lose their emotional strength due to that misplaced bassline. Misplaced? Well, maybe this comes out a bit strong; it's just too 'electro' compared to the track’s orientation. Well it's still a quality remix prod wise but certainly the weakest of the bunch.
Well, that last remix from Logistik Sounds kind of disappointed me but this release is pure value for money due to the original and experimental interpretations. Emote delivers and delivers and delivers; I haven’t heard a track from them that didn’t have something to offer. I hope this is just the beginning and they have a long and prosperous string of superb digital releases.
