Jeff Devas - Birthday Suit (Emote)
Release Date: November 0th, 2006
Reviewed: 10/10

I have been getting so many great tracks from the Emote stable that I feel almost overwhelmed by the amount of quality and consistency. I feel lucky to be a reviewer when I get this kind of material in my hands. Reading my own words, I feel that some may see this with certain disbelief but hey! You have the right to have your own opinion. I'm sure that those who have already got their hands on Emote material have been amazed and have felt the same refreshing breeze of hope in the electronica/dance industry. But enough with the intros, let's get down to the real deal: the music it self and first of all come the producers supplying us with it. Jeff Devas has released music on 3 Beat Breaks, Looq Records, Fiberline Audio, and Proton Music, and received support from artists such as, Matthew Dekay, John Digweed, Hernan Cattaneo, Luke Chable, and Micah. He has also remixed artists such as Sasha, Momu, BT, Highland, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Terry Grant, Jaytech, and AFK. This is an established artist of the genre with a history going way back. Emote Music’s head honcho Jacob Todd, who is supplying the wonderful remix, is know for his work on such labels as CP Recordings, M-Theory, 3 Beat Breaks, Babylon, Sentient Audio Collective, Within EXP, and Parabolic. So what we have here is a collaboration between two enormously talented producers and we can certainly express our hopes for something great and encouraging for our poor ears that get to hear all kinds of second class material.

Jeff Devas' original 'Birthday Suit' is a production effort starting with all kinds of uplifting sounds and a strong rhythm section. The baseline is pulsating and the drum beats are quite 'in you face', as one might say. The synth work is filled with emotions; this is the type of track that gives you goosebumps and makes you think of all the happy and sad things in life simultaneously. An epic workout with all the required trickery to make it contemporary, I can only add that I've been served with the best quality around and a true future classic for the deep, uplifting prog genre.

Jacob Todd is always looking ahead towards the future. At least, that's the impression I get by listening to his work. He gives this a dark edge with some wicked melodies to begin with plus a dark pad-like baseline that gives you the creeps. A very thick wall of opaque dark sounds it is. It heads for an altogether different direction; stripping out the 'happy' factor of the original and the result is certainly worthy.

I have a penchant for the original but Jacob’s work is synonymous to quality and he maintains this for yet another release. Jeff Devas on the other hand gives progressive music what it seems to need a lot as of late: emotion, progression, quality, impeccable production even for today’s standards and a much deserved 'Birthday Suit'. I love this, I mean how come I don’t get my hands on more of this? Why is everyone releasing if they can’t get this type of quality out of the machines? I have to make those questions and all the producers out there should consider asking themselves too.
