Hernan Paredes - Spectral
(Omnis Recordings)
Release Date:
Reviewed: 8/10
Argentina is the true American home of progressive sounds. A scene that has been taken to the forefront of progressive thanks (mainly) to Hernan Cattaneo and of course many skillful producers whose work has have crossed the Atlantic more than once. This time another Hernan, Hernan Paredes, is about to unleash his first release (according to his personal site) called 'Spectral' through Omnis, a California-based digital label with artists like Jonathan Ojeda and Parlange in their ranks. He is also about to release several other tracks this year. Hernan is an established DJ in Argentina and has decided, like many DJs around the globe, to start releasing his own material to enhance his sets. This step isn’t always providing good results but let's see what Mr. Paredes has to offer to Argentinean prog lovers.
'Spectral' starts off in typical deep tribal/prog fashion with sharp beats, a moody bassline and all kinds of floating effects that disappear as fast as they join the mix. Some reverbed basslines and vocal hooks add extra flavors as the track evolves and shows its subtle deepness. The tribal percussive elements are there but I don’t know how welcome they are anymore to contemporary prog listeners. These are the kind of vibes that are welcome in a club without making their presence felt in a loud way. The breakdown will probably turn heads towards the DJ booth without ever rising to a hands-in-the-air moment. This is music made by a DJ for a DJ; first of all, for his tribal/prog sets and for all those djs that stick to this genre.
On much needed remix duties is Chadwick Strange, an artist that seems to be rising in the most rapid of ways but with steady steps, having already released quite a few of his original tracks thourgh Omnis. Eoghan Harron, PH member and producer, has recently started a thread about Chadwick’s production skills so I was looking forwards to this. The use of the original parts is very well organized taking the track to a deeper emotional progressive direction. Chadwick introduces his own pads that would sound in place in any of Sasha’s great sets from back in the days when they used to be great. These pads, in addition to more subtle and intricate beats and simple but effective basslines, take this track to a wider audience and to many music lovers. Not as groovy as the original when it comes to heads down dancing but this is one mental remix all right.
Overall, a release that rises above mediocrity and stands out even more thanks to Chadwick Strange’s remix that is probably, in addition to his ever growing stack of original releases from Omnis, the beginning of a flourishing career in production for this man with the strange name. Nevertheless, all tribal DJs out there need to check out Paredes too for any future release with his name on it.
