Anthony Velarde & Mark Alston - Skyla (Acute Recordings)
Release Date: December 0th, 2006
Reviewed: 8/10

A heavily New York influenced affair marks Acute’s 52nd release. Anthony Velarde and Jason Jollins are both well-known on the NYC club circuit for their DJing and production exploits and they team up here to release ‘Skyla’.

Tribal sounding percussion work dominates the lengthy intro. A deep stab is the first of many layers to be added that turns that track from its insipid beginnings into somewhat of a dancefloor monster. The pads and arps are unashamedly progressive, building incessantly to a crescendo before spinning into a piano-based breakdown. A breakbeat section marks the second part of the breakdown before giving way to the straight 4/4 beat that remains for the remainder of the piece.

Definitely one for the prog-heads, but the percussion offers a slight hint at house that may spread the appeal slightly on yet another solid release for Acute.
