Coalesced - Awakening (Morphosis Records)
Release Date: May 7th, 2007
Reviewed: 8/10

Hungarian producer Retroid is somewhat of a favourite at ph.com headquarters, with a string of top quality releases and remixes already to his name. His digilabel, Morphosis, has been following in a similar vein with a couple of intriguing early releases. Little information is available about Coalesced, the artist behind the third release, ‘Awakening’, so we’ll jump straight into the music.

The original begins in a fairly straightforward progressive manner. A sharp kick and subtle keys underpin the track while some growling synths add some flavour. Knowing of Retroid’s penchant for proggy breaks, we shouldn’t be too surprised to hear ‘Awakening’ take a sudden turn down a syncopated route. The elements remain similar but with more emphasis placed on the melodic piano riff, balancing out the menacing synth perfectly. A gentle breakdown ends with spiralling effect that launches us back into the main portion of the track – which itself now comes together with a fair degree of euphoria. A nice piece although the switch from a straight house beat into breaks will enthuse and annoy people in equal measure.

The Mango remix uses most of the main elements of the original but ties the track to a straight 4/4 format. The bassline is deepened to cavernous proportions but the overall atmosphere is slightly more laidback, almost summery, with smooth pads throughout and a dizzying breakdown.

The Nieghel remix is pure progressive breaks, rich on melody laid over an intriguingly squelchy bassline. A bizarre, electrically charged mini-breakdown ushers in a new phase of the track, heavy on industrial sounding percussion. The melody is slowly re-introduced and takes its rightful place at the forefront of the piece.

Another fine release from Retroid and his Morphosis label. There is plenty here to keep progressive fans happy.
