John Mc Iver - Face the Music (Mode Music)
Release Date:
Reviewed: 3.5/5

Mode music is an Irish based label that’s been making some noise on the global circuit over the last year with a bunch of quirky releases and this time it’s an outing for Belfast based John Mc Iver with Face the Music .

The Original mix is house based with a low rolling groove provided by cranking rhythms and sleek, calming melodies that unravel. The mood is sombre and deepens nearing the break but there’s light at the end of the tunnel, stepping up a notch with winding synthline giving the dancfloor reward we’re waiting for.

There’s two mixes to choose from with Simon Baker creating a whacky alternative, twisting out a techy number whose head melting melody distracts us from the fact it’s morphing from dark and aggressive to being immersed in wonky tribal beats. Add to this some scary effected sounds intensely drilling into our mind and this remix should definitely come with a health warning

Timmy Stewart hit’s us with a straight up dancefloor track that’s steeped in atmosphere’s of times past. It’s sleek and sexy house music with the break clinching it for me, subtly building while Africanizing the mood with some vocals.

This is one for the house crew and each mix holds it’s own ground with some inventiveness but it’s Simon Bakers mix that succeeds in being the most adventurous.

Brian Cody [03-Feb-2008]
