DOF aka Stama & Nick Proteus - People & Places From The Past (Erase)
Release Date:
Reviewed: 9/10

Based in Greece, Erase have been plodding along nicely over the past few months. The two brains of the Erase outfit, Stama and Nick Proteus, combine here under their Degrees of Freedom guise to deliver the label’s best release to date.

The original starts of as a racy (132bpm) progressive breaks workout and dives straight in at the deep end with a melody straight from the Northern Exposure mould. The track breaks down after a less a minute and transforms itself into a dubbed out, chugging, almost ambient number. The track changes in style again halfway through as the soft strains of emotive vocal washes in. The remainder of the track is a straight 4/4 house beat through to the conclusion. The last half of the track lacks the imagination and daring of the first half and although the change of style is interesting, the start of the track was so exquisite, it seems a shame to alter it.

On the b-side, man of the moment Tim Fretwell steps up to the crease to lend his weight to the package. Fretwell, as you would expect, keeps the beats broken and rolling. The melody drifts in and out with an ethereal quality, supported by subtle sweeping pads. The vocal is used sparingly but effectively to liven up the central portion of the track. Another quality production from Fretwell.

Erase have always picked out slightly more unusual tracks to release, and this is no exception. Some of them have worked, others haven’t, but with ‘People & Places From The Past’ they have a real gem on their hands. A little more direction wouldn’t have gone amiss on the original – the components are all there and the artists have to be applauded for pushing the envelope, but sometimes simplicity is the key. Fretwell delivers yet another top draw remix to round off a release that is both excellent and interesting in equal measure.
