Jono Fernandez - Northern Lights (Erase)
Release Date:
Reviewed: 7/10

Jono Fernandez is one of those producers who, although lacking the media attention of some higher profile music makers, turns out quality tracks on a regular basis. With last year’s jaw-droppingly gorgeous ‘Colours Of Conscience’ is still getting regular airing across the globe, 2004 has been an equally good year for the Melbourne-based producer, with a solid collaboration with Luke Chable for Screen Recordings (‘Come To Me’) and the excellent ‘Deliver Me’ on Institution. 2005 looks set to continue in a similar vein with ‘Northern Lights’ arriving courtesy of Greece’s Erase Records.

Fernandez reverts back to his deeper side here, with ‘Northern Lights’ having a very similar feel to his first release ‘Lo Runner/Suede’ on Zero Tolerance. The rumbling bass is classic Fernandez and a hallmark of Melbourne producers such as Mortar & Pestle, Luke Chable and Precision. The melodies pop their heads above the parapet of bass occasionally, teasing the ear and tempting the feet. The track doesn’t reach any sort of climax, but it rolls on pleasantly enough. A solid early set record.

Remix duties on the b-side are handed to Nick Proteus, Erase’s head honcho, under his Low Pressure guise. The beats are toughened and a whirlpool effects spiral through the track, while the Japanese vocal echoes softly yet incessantly; the result is a remix that sounds even more Fernandez-esque than the original! Again, not a peak time record, but solid mood-setting stuff.

Erase and Jono Fernandez continue to forge a path through the progressive forest. Both deserve more recognition than they have so far received: Fernandez for his quality productions; Erase for not sticking to tried and tested formulae. One day that recognition will come, but although this is a good release, it won’t turn heads like both undoubtedly can.
