Balance 13 - Mixed by S.O.S (Eq recordings)

By now this must have compilation series has become a household name having seen artists like Chris Fortier , Paolo Mojo , James Holden and Jimmy Van M lay down some serious mixes in the past and for the 13th installment London based Dj outfit SOS Collective have been called upon to compile a massive 180+ minutes of infectious grooves . SOS Collective , or SexOnSubstance are the trio of Desyn Masiello, Omid 16b and Demi.

Spread over 3 Cd’s SOS bring together a vast range of genre’s on Balance 13 as the mix takes shape with the soothing ‘Seagull’ from Omid , a highly emotive guitar track that sets sail the mood of what’s to come. The groove lifts as housier numbers from AN2 and Modern heads ft Pig&Dan begin to set the pace but not for long as a more experimental side creeps in, pulling us further into the cosmos with interesting tracks from Smith & Selway and Speedy J’s ‘De Orbit’ .

Once again though the mix re-configures and before we know plunged into the 80’s with a spanky SOS re-edit of ‘Don’t stop the dance’ from Bryan Ferry before morphing back to deeper territory with ambient , Arabic and more eclectic sounds including The Cure’s Lullabye to finish off what’s been an action packed 62 minutes so far .

Cd 2 picks up from where we left off as Lullabye’s guitar melody kicks into a fantastic dubby SOS re-work, one of the standout tracks on the mix and pushes events into its clubbier phase. Tracks from Josel, The Blacklight society and Spirit Catchers ‘Brain Candy’ create one of those feel good moments you remember from the dancefloor and probably by now your speakers are hopping off the floor.....

The late Freddie Mercury posses the question is this the real life? …as SOS dice and splice another big room number with Aeroplanes dub mix bringing us to the mid point of the mix which pushes further still. Ink & Needle’s ‘Six’ glides cleanly into the party vibe of Inner City’s ‘Big Fun’ and finishes up with Logo’s from Henrik B.

The final disc comes together with a beautifully rich blend of breaks and blissful strings as Speedy J’s ‘Fill’ and ‘Salome’ from Joash takes us to another plain and drops us with a bang because for the remainder of the disc its strictly for the dancefloor . Music from Paul Keely , Dimitri and Loco dice turn up the heat further while Alessi Brothers ‘Savin’ the day’ is mish-mashed for maximum effect by SOS before finishing up is the contorting ‘Full of E_emty’ from Omid .

With every new installment of the Balance series from Eq it outshines what has come before. This spectacular 3cd mix from SOS isn’t just a bunch of current tracks but a whole listening experience that’s passionately stitched together from the bottom up. It touches on what’s present but also delves into the past and plucks some forgotten moments for us to enjoy once more. As mixes go it’s smooth, clean and is something to actively seek out for your music collection.
