Djak Unit - Morning Glories (Kickroach Recordings)
Release Date: June 10th, 2008
Reviewed: 3/5
User Rating: 3.1/5

As a somewhat disappointing follow up to "Space Camp," Djak Unit and Kickroach present "Morning Glories." The eight new tracks are hit or miss, but with a respectable use of vocal samples.

Morning Glory unfortunately doesn’t have much appeal with its super-basic percussion. It does however have some appealing progressive bass elements and a verbed-up space vocal, but the xylophonic synth is overly simple/unpleasant and the pitch bending in the outro can be hard to layer.

Floor Cleaner is more in the mode, featuring more interesting vocal samples, more variety in percussion and pads, and a welcomed synth-bass drop that lends a cool progressive-tech vibe. FAV

Kerplunk has some nice sound selection as well, and a quasi-steppin’ kick pattern. FAV

Sleazy Dance has a nice chugging syncopation and a sick mangled-up synth. FAV

Strange Daze, Physical Attraction and La Cite Dort again, suffer from overly simplistic chord progressions, and not much variety/appeal in the percussion phrases.

As Ur has some interesting glitch, fuzz, and nice sound selection, but is very tracky and spaced out, which is Djak territory after all.

Overall, I like the way Djak is using what could be the kind of typical vocal clip samples found in a lot of tech house in ways (reverbs, key shifting) that really fit them nicely into the mix. I’d like to see remixes of some of these, but the others may just be holding this release back a bit.
