Nop - Egoist (BEEF records)

1. NOP : Egoist (original mix)
NOP is the musical project of Hiromichi Honda, a young producer based in Tokyo, whose involvement in the electronic scene has given rise to a few releases at some respected labels including Swiss Sog records, and to regular appearances in parties and club life in Japan. “Egoist” skilfully demonstrates how to flavour a moderate rhythmic combo driven by an offset yet bouncy bassline and light kick drum. Hence, the main interest lies in the synth line that serves up a hooky techy lead, smoothly evolving from marimba percussion work towards a trippy little melody undergoing transposes and tone changes. It delivers a nice drive, contrasted by soaring synth pads and surging, airy chorus effects. Don’t expect a danceloor stomper but this is an elegant genre-crossing piece.

2. NOP : Salt and Sugar (original rmx)
The fourth piece in the pack from our Japanese producer gives a reserved exploration of the electro-house register, with a set of moderately funky rhythms intertwining with contrasted, arpeggiated retro-sounding synth lines. This lacks a sharper edge IMHO, especially from the dance-floor perspective, although it might be a good fit for a warm-up bar kind of venue.

3. NOP : Egoist (Prime Time rmx)
French duo Prime Time brings together Jeremy Carrasco (better known as Dj Natas, who has been one of France’s finest progressive djs for years) and Johan Speissegger. Their project is now signed to dynamic Swiss label Kumquat tunes, and has gained some recognition through a collaboration with the much-respected Techno producer Oxia. Their rework takes the seminal piece into more orthodox minimal territories, as they keep the rattles of the percussive work but spice it up with spaced out metalic interventions and quirky, wacky zooming sound effects that build up to a catchy climactic midterm episode, before returning to the rickety tech-house momentum. You definitely hear their mastery of minimal, but they ensure a fare dose of psychedelia. Nice one.

4. NOP : Egoist (Dekades rmx)
Czech project Dekades gives us an abbreviated, minimal reworking of the original, which means, in this particular case, a rather stripped back version, since the piece alludes more to prog-house influence. The conversing motif is the only original idea to sustain interest, but it’s a rather bland one.

5. NOP : Salt and Sugar (D-Sens rmx)
French Matthieu Delepau of D-Sens fame, who already has a few relases on progressive labels such as Iboga, Open, and his own label Bus records, is the next to put his spin on this one, giving it the minimal-techno treatment. His piece mostly insists on the percussive vocabulary and syntax that are classic in the genre, which serve to enhance the midterm interlude made of a soaring undulating pad, laced with effects that convincingly change the atmosphere. But it remains a bit barren IMHO.

Bottom line:
My favourites are the original mix and the Prime Time rmx.
