Alter Breed - Randevous Ep (Tribal Vision)
Release Date: May 9th, 2008
Reviewed: 3.5/5

Alter Breed is the new Progressive House and Electro duo from Israel, formed by talented producers Vik Shagal and Alex Krupenko. Their discography is still in its early stages, having only released at Blue Tunes so far, but they have more exciting remixes to come, signed at Tribal Vision, Flow, and Echoplast, some of the most respected labels of the industry. Their music style is firmly rooted in Progressive House / Electro, but they are clearly seeking new directions by crossing established genre boundaries such as Trance and Techno.

Randevous is the type of a late afternoon party piece or opening for the lounge set, featuring light breezy prog house rhythms, soft echoing pads, a very simple melody in the break with serene and glistening tight arpeggios. There is nothing ground-breaking in there, but it’s a well produced canonic track.

Things get a slightly sharper edge with Synthetic, which exhibits a pounding kick drum/snare combo, delivering more groove, and leans towards electro-house with a sweet siliconed bassline. The elliptic reverberated motif converses efficiently with the “synthetic” voice sample. Undeniably, there is more dance floor energy in there, without it being a stomper.

Hedgehog definitely goes deeper into electro-house aesthetics. The crafty rhythmic combo will inevitably remind the listener of the effective style of Deadmau5 with a few direct yet discreet quotations. This alluring rhythmic combo underlays an obsessive loop conversing with another classic “electro” voice sample. Definitely more dance-floor oriented. My favourite one in this release.

Bottom line
Nothing groundbreaking in this release, yet here we have 3 well-produced pieces to fit the club or very progressive hours of the set, and a good teaser for their future releases.
