Argy - Focus On: Argy (Poker Flat)

German House producer Argy and Poker Flat Recordings present “Focus On: Argy,” a compilation mix of Argy’s own work and collaborations.

While German House at the moment seems to rely mainly on heavily filtered and dubbed out samples, there is still a decent amount of variety to “Focus On: Argy.” Some tracks have that classic jackin’ house feel, while others turn dubby, trippy, and some even a little proggy. The individual tracks here posses a delightfully hypnotic progressive character in the song structure, with a lot of dubby echoes and lengthy protracted phrases.

This mix really functions as a showcase for Argy’s impressive production skills; so the no-frills automated mixing is somewhat understandable.

Throughout the compilation, Argy seems to be conducting some very delicate changes within each track to move the songs along and the majority is excellent, but at some points we are left deep in a groove with such subtle changes taking place that unfortunately a slight sense of monotony begins to take over.

Only two tracks were a little disappointing: the sickly wail of Malena, and the lackluster plainness of Under no Illusions. Others boast much more originality and appeal, such as the quirky acid tinged Love Dose, the wandering delays of Anemone, and the swinging funk of Cantstandlovegetaway.

Many of these tracks are quite good and this mix should generate a fair amount interest in Argy’s work.
