Christian Smith - Flyertalk/Friendly Skies (Bedrock records)
Release Date: August 25th, 2008
Reviewed: 4.5/5

Unless you have been incarcerated since the late nineties you may have heard of Bedrock records, probably the most widely recognised label on the progressive scene and more recently showing their penchant for pure underground music by reaching out further from just one sound. This is no more evident than with this double header from Christian Smith.

Smith, more known in Techno circles, has put out some big tracks in the last year, notably ‘Transit Time’ on Sino and ‘Total Departure’ on Adam Beyer’s Drumcode label (produced with John Selway) but this offering is something different.

Both Flyertalk and Friendly Skies reek of 3am peaktime but rather than jangling techno, we're treated to an array of sublime grooves. Imagine Steve Porter meets Filterheadz and the resulting sound wouldn’t be far off with Smith gradually shaping tight, wholesome beats and a non-offensive, uplifting mood in a way that takes the listener by surprise. What begins as subtle feel good music builds and builds from the very start and opens the mood out completely using energising melody hooks to do all the work needed.

Sometimes it’s the simplest ideas that are the best but it’s the overall production and arrangement on these tracks that make them stand head and shoulders above other summertime releases.
