Joel Armstrong - El Squelcho (Nightshade Music)
Release Date: August 18th, 2008
Reviewed: 4/5
User Rating: 3.7/5

Chicago-based imprint, Nightshade Music is making a name for itself by following a fairly simple business plan, which includes releasing only high quality music. Nightshade's ninth release, "Joel Armstrong - El Squelcho" adds to this up and coming label's great reputation for delivering high-end sounds.

"El Squelcho (Original Mix)" by Joel Armstrong is full of groove, and could arguably be the best version found in this monster pack. The original has an unrelenting groove, filled with finely tuned synths, and organ elements that give off a happy, techy vibe. The fusion of progressive and tech works perfectly. Excellent production.

M&D Substance Remix is an elegant progressive rework. Driven by a synth that is reminiscent of a horror movie, and a bouncy bassline. This one would be a great opening or building track for DJs.

The Nosmo v Kris B Remix is high quality progressive, complimented by some techy elements which should make this remix appealing to many. Yet another top-notch production from this duo, who just seem to be getting better with every release.

The Logiztik Sounds version should garner the most support from the tech-house crowd. It's slightly similar to the original, but strays more toward gritty techno-driven elements. An absolutely stunning breakdown uses Armstrong's organ samples, and stretches and tweaks them with effects to make a powerful statement. Perfect!

Mike Kiraly's Radio Science Dub is a typical dub. It's a little more stripped-down than the original, but Kiraly does a good job at making this one peaktime-friendly. There is a nice quick, but powerful breakdown that really lifts the energy of the track mid-way through.

Kabuto & Koji "The Tokes" interpretation is a nice progressive remix, that offers a nice winding synth to get things started quickly. For DJs, this one could be great as an opener, or possibly to end a set.

Jarius Miller's remix follows the progressive theme, and is well produced, but this one is missing something. I guess when you have a package busting out of the seams with quality, a remix like this kind of gets lost in the shuffle. This one just didn't have the "it factor."

Kudos go out to Nightshade for putting this package together. By the looks of things, we can expect to be seeing many more of these great releases from the Nightshade camp for quite some time.

"Great production quality here, hard to pick a favorite, but would have to be original as defined, well produced signature and elements, the remixes don't do it much justice except for The Tokes mix. going deep..." - 3.0 / 5

"I would have to pick the Mike Kiraly's radio science dub as my top pick on this one, shortly followed by or equal to the original mix. Most of the mixes seem to have a hint of lounge feel to them. Decent release" - 3.5 / 5
