Coalesced - Cortina
(Polytechnic Recordings)
Release Date: August 12th, 2008
Reviewed: 4.5/5
User Rating: 4.1/5
From the UK comes another dynamic duo of producers, aiming high with their production work. Mike Bandoni & James Warren, together known as Coalesced, have been turning the heads of superstar jocks, bedroom DJs and music enthusiasts for the past 2 years. Their latest offering Cortina, on the consistent hitmaker label Polytechnic has been moving the masses in clubs across the world this summer.
Cortina gets some major superstar remix help from Jody Westernoff; of Way Out West fame, the rapidly rising American progressive stalwarts, Darin Epsilon and Bitfiend. An EP like this looks appealing, and the nice 'Dukes of Hazzard' style cover theme works well for piquing curiosity as well.
'Cortina (original)' is a beautiful classic-progressive breaks piece, that ensues a certain retro feel. 'Cortina' throws you back to the good ol' days, while at the same time reminding us of the great strides that the music industry has made technology-wise. A beautifully organized melody remains constant throughout. Nice work, that laid the groundwork for the remixers to really shine in this EP.
Cortina (Jody Westernoff Remix) is everything we've come to expect from this musical genius. Giving 'Cortina' the "Jody touch", he polishes the already groovy and rhythmic melody and hook provided with a nice bassline, and some added synths. This one is timeless.
'Cortina (Darin Epsilon Remix)' is the peak-hour floor killer of the bunch. Darin loads this remix with a high energy driving bassline, and re-arranges everything just perfectly. Great attention to detail is evident here, and this one is sure to rock any dancefloor, at any given time.
Cortina (Bitfiend Remix) is another stunning rework, worthy of plenty of support and play as well. Not quite as noticeable as Jody and Darin's, but hey..that's not easy competition either.
You know you have a quality piece of music when all the remixers use a large number of the original elements provided by the original composers. Cortina is timeless, full of fun, happy rhythms; and is a true testament to what classic progressive house is all about.
