MOS - Filterama (Feat Moonbeam, Roman Salzger remix)
(Vibrating Balance Records)
Release Date: September 2nd, 2008

MOS, aka Manuel Sofia, from BA Argentina, has been at the forefront of the progressive-tech revolution since its explosion into the mainstream these past several years. His trademark fusion of slick, tight, and stripped down tech-house percussion & bass paired with beautiful and sometimes sweeping melodies has tagged him as one of the most relevant and innovative producers of progressive music in the industry. This also marks the third release from new-comers Vibrating Balance which was founded in Sydney, Australia by Jason Lowe and DJ Schwa of Beef Recordings.
The Filterama (original mix) is spacey, bass heavy and MOS opts to ditch his sometimes wispy early-set style for a very big room feel with stabs, electro-tinged riffs, and pads that scream in filtered-distortion to make up the final melodies. The summation of the parts, however, remains constrained and the climax swells more than it explodes. Perhaps not knocking down the walls, but certainly dynamic.
Roman Salzger, who has laid down wax recently with John Dahlback on Pickadoll and La Bien et Le Mal, takes those electro-tinged elements and focuses them into a full-on Electro House remix. It's aggressive in a acidly-synthesized and repetitive fashion, the beats are extremely tight, and it will do well on the dance floor but it's certainly nothing we haven't heard before.
Dave Jales, another fresh face from Australia, takes the original and slides it back another half-step into a more mellow progressive tune. Here some of the dynamic is lost as well as some of the polish, as the hits lose their crispness and the punches are more pom-poms than hammers. Certainly not Jales' full potential of which he showed inklings of last year in his remix of "Simplicity" by Shades of Gray.
Moonbeam...Moonbeam *epitomizes* progression on their rework and turn in one of their best remixes so far this year. The way these two Russian phenoms construct their tracks with gates, filters, compression, attack and sustain is nothing short of incredible. They make a full use of the arsenal available to them like few others. The remix is taught, like a rope stretched almost to the point of fraying, and that tension magnifies itself perfectly into a track that is almost nothing without it. I far prefer this take on Techno and Progressive to their Trancier remixes of late, and it reminds me of their work with Extrawelt, Noir and Perfect Stranger that made them one of my top acts to watch this year. It's a fantastic remix and a staple addition to the moodier or more sophisticated set.
All in all, Vibrating Balance makes a statement for being very much in the *now* with this release, and with more future work with such top notch producers as these, could prove to be yet another powerhouse from the Land Down Under. MOS stays true to form, and although not necessarily pushing new boundaries, he maintains his status and those of his remixers as desirable in the business. A very solid EP.
