Matt Rowan - Self Inflicted / Hot Steppin (Proton Music)
Release Date: August 20th, 2008
Reviewed: 5/5
User Rating: 4.3/5

Proton Music is definitely producing an array of great music of different styles and this one caught my attention. Respected Australian DJ Matt Rowan seems to be a busy man, both on release and remix work. This is his latest offering "Self Inflicted / Hot Steppin"

Starting with a Self Inflicted remix by musical colleague, Jaytech, this hits into action hard! The groove is quite something, plenty of atmosphere and a hint of aggression, which carries on a beat that shouts, "get ready!" The song has real drift quality across the background of the mix, contrasting with a rock solid beat.

Next, a tune I spoke of with their "Particles" compilation, "Hot Stepping" remixed by Soliquid.
Words can't speak enough on this tune and it made a huge impact on me upon first listen. This is an example of everything hitting huge at the same time, bringing something very special. A DJ's best friend in the record box perhaps? I´m talking full floor club riot, this will more then shake the house off it foundations! A real mental phazer at the 2 minute point that shows the club this is going to bring the business, just hope your sound system can pull it off. The sound is like all the top 10 dance acts coming together and injecting their best into a track!

Self Inflicted Roman Rai Mix follows with plenty of melody. The metallic leads and sweeps grace this one and bring you a bit of a summer mix-up.

Finally, Self Inflicted gets a look from Jelebee Cartel. The bass is deep and grinding, and their sound offers brief sonic excursions mixed in, while the notes gliding up and down are a nice touch.

A nice release and I do urge you to get a good listen to "Hot Stepping", better still give it a spin.

"Jaytech remix works best for me. Good chugging groove, will support this at shows. Great funky percussion in the Roman Rai remix, the melodies and bassline don't really feel like they're fitting in though." - 4.0 / 5
