GMJ - Torgant EP (Open Records)
Release Date: September 4th, 2008
Reviewed: 3/5
User Rating: 3.8/5

Australia’s up and coming progressive label, Open Records unleashes this pack of promising tech and prog tunes from Melbourne’s Gavin Martin, aka GMJ, with a great rework by French producer, D-Sens, via the “Torgant EP.”

On the A side, Torgant’s sound selection didn’t really pique my interest and the track could use some more production tricks (e.g. delays, drum fills, filter sweeps) to break it up, as it’s a little monotonous. Although, I did like the Vector remix by GMJ’s alter ego, Fulcrum; it’s banging techno once you get to the peak phrases.

Curious calm is a steady progressive builder and could be a formidable track, with its cool atmospherics, spaced-out, vibrating and droning leads. All pushing the tune along, while futuristic pads and sound efx round this one out. But in general, the sub-bass on this entire release seems not-so-well-defined. However, with Curious calm, the sound selection is good and quite interesting, so I found it works good just layered in over the top of other stuff.

The Curious Calm (D-Sens Remix) is surely a redeeming addition to this EP. D-Sens has dealt with the muddy sub-bass by simply setting it lower in the mix, affording a better groove while letting the progressive hypnotics flow. My pick of the pack.
