Stan Kolev is no stranger to producing hit records. After moving from Bulgaria to Miami at a young age, Stan began making ripples in the house music culture back in 1996 as a DJ in many of South Beach's most innovative and legendary venues. Since then, his original and remix production works have been championed by top labels such as Baroque, Plastic Fantastic & Plastica (to name a few); while also being featured on 2 Ministry of Sound compilations, and on other compilations by Paul Oakenfold, Hernan Cattaneo, Kazell and David Morales. Lately, Kolev has been teaming up with Canada's Ready Mix Records, who now bring us "F-Substance", a single from Stan's full-length album "Emotional Content", which was released earlier this year. F-Substance (Original Mix) is a warm house tune laced with captivating chords, atmospheric layers, and beautifully arranged synth stabs. Stan's supreme production abilities are wildly evident as each climbing bar and measure passes by. Melody is overflowing through the seams of this track, as even the bassline is laced with a melodic groove, and set on top a catchy, synth-driven rhythm that takes the listener on an aural journey to a beautiful tropical island - somewhere in outer space. Highly sought-after Dutch producer Bart Van Wissen lends his hand and creates a perfect contrast on this release, with his remix of F-Substance. While the original is calm, cool and collective, Bart's interpretation is injected with a stiff dose of performance enhancing substances, making it highly effective dancefloor weaponry. While still catering to an atmospheric vibe, Bart delivers a driving bassline that screams "Dance!" at the top of it's lungs. All the melody of the original remains intact, with the addition of some new synth work during the breakdowns, some added fx and tweaks, and of course that amazing bassline. Proggy, techy, housey, groovy and juicy - could we ask for a better combination? For those of you who have yet to check out Stan's "Emotional Content" album, let this release serve as a pleasant reminder as to what you're missing. It's releases like this that are strongly influencing the return of melody into house music. A return that I, for one, am ready to wholeheartedly embrace.
