Ben Preston - Nervous Breakdown (Emotive Sounds)
Release Date: September 18th, 2008
Reviewed: 4/5
User Rating: 3.7/5

As one half of The Tastemakers, Ben Preston's productions have already chalked up support marks from mainstays such as Fergie, Dave Spoon, Stonebridge, Micky Slim, Bodyrox, Noir and Funkagenda. This 21-year old from the UK is on a meteoric rise, and his latest release on Emotive Sounds shows just how talented this young man is. This is Ben Preston - "Nervous Breakdown".

"Nervous Breakdown" gets going with a nice deep kick, accompanied by quick little synth chirps and high hats. After the first full measure, the enchanting melodic synth chords enter the picture; which then lay the foundation to this nice progressive house thumper. The first lengthy breakdown introduces various atmospheric layers, which really set a nice, subtle tone. The energy level slowly builds, but the slow winding melody is one that would be very soothing toward the end of a long night, in my opinion.

Ivan Dulava turns in a nice rework; using a deep and powerful driving bassline that really sets an entirely different tone. He slowly enters the main synth chord, chopping it up a bit, and drawing it out, to create a darker and more cinematic feeling during a nearly 2-minute long breakdown, in the first half of the track. It's not as energetic as the original, but Dulava has really done an excellent job making this track his own.

Manual Addicts remix is very similar to the original, in many ways. More reverb has been added to the hook line, along with many other effects. At times things sound a little hollow, but overall the production work is great.

The NTFO remix is a huge curveball, which adds a terrific contrast to this package. This one is a fierce little minimal tech house tune, that one would barely recognize at first. NTFO uses a nice bouncy bassline, along with subtle synth chirps to build things up. During the breaks, the dreamy vibes and atmospheric elements from "Nervous Breakdown" really take over, but NTFO does a great job at using just the right parts to make a fierce statement. A very well-executed remix, that should be in any minimal or tech house lover's collection.

Great release from Ben, which should appeal to both progressive and also tech lovers, thanks to NTFO!

"I'm not usually much for straight house, but the synths in the original mix moved me, and the Ivan Dulava remix was a bit flat. The Manual Addicts remix was a swell working of the tune. " - 5.0 / 5
