Julien West - Ni hao (No Border Recordings)
Release Date: September 23rd, 2008
Reviewed: 3/5
User Rating: 3.6/5

Germany based No Border Recordings, with previous releases coming from the likes of Steve Callaghan and Ciprian Lemnaru, bring us their latest from Julien West. There are two mixes on offer, which for a digital package may be 1 mix too light in my opinion.

Ni Hao Original is a good, solid track with tight drums and percussion, not to mention some subtle melodic chimes filling up the mix nicely. Something useful for a radio or promotional mix set for sure.

The Pascal Vert remix has an analogue style bass feel to it. Some nice subtle strings and electronic sweeps add to the vibe too. This mix seems slightly the better of the two.

Both mixes are good, well produced, and musically sound. This was the 5th release issued by the label. Look for Russia's Jeter Avio and the Romanian Ciprian Lemnaru, providing the 6th and 7th releases in the coming months.

"Simple, yet highly effective. Sets the pace for building upon a smooth mix. Good driving music." - 3.0 / 5

"the Vert mix is the better of these two tracks. The original has a very high frequency timbre in it that makes me never wanna hear it again." - 2.5 / 5
Jeffrey Collins (USA)
(Aenaria, MAR186, Ascension, Point Records)

"The Original Mix is interesting to me for its airy mix of styles, and the Pascal Vert remix carries that same airy style but with a more authoritative bassline and a groovy synth that pushes you right into every downbeat. Very classy, very groovy. I love it." - 5.0 / 5

"Two well written tracks. Pretty good stuff. The Pascal Vert remix is nice and chiled out, good contrast to the original, which is much more energetic and uptempo." - 4.0 / 5

"tracks are interesting in an ambient kind of way, but the production value is surprisingly poor and sounds poorly mixed and un-mastered" - 2.5 / 5

"i would have ranked this higher but the mastering is horrible. it's one of those tracks you have to really ride the faders on to make sure the bottom doesn't drop out when you play it because it's so quite. other than that it's a very good tune." - 2.0 / 5
