Yura Popov & Ladan - Get Kinky EP
(Polytechnic Recordings)
Release Date: November 4th, 2008

Both hailing from the same local area in Russia, Yura Popov and Sergey Ladan are strongly determined to leave their marks in house music. Popov spent many years producing more of a commercial style of music, before really discovering his niche in house in 2007. Sergey Ladan is not a newcomer to house music, he has been in the studio since 2002, and has just recently settled into a new studio. These two talented up-and-comers recently worked together in the studio, and the end result is Yura Popov & Ladan's "Get Kinky EP," set to be released October 7th on Polytechnic Recordings.
Get Kinky is a prime example of the strengths possessed by these two artists. A pounding kick dominates the soundscape, laying down the groove for what turns out to be a funk-filled, booty shakin' progressive tune, splashed with many techy elements. A basic synth rhythm leads the way as the percussion bounces along and follows the main synth line which drives everything. This is a very nicely laid out and well organized piece of music, which would be perfect in a club atmosphere. It has a certain dub aura about it, which caters well to massive sound systems and intoxicated dancers. It's the type of track one would want to play at a steady point during a set, as it reaches a plateau early on, and remains at that level for the duration.
On the flip side, we have Ocean World, coming more from the tech house side of the spectrum. Quick synth stabs, along with bleeps, blips and some nice effects really all come together to form a bouncy little tune. Lots of pads and bells really create a spacey feel, and the additional arpeggiated pads really make for a nice uplifting vibe. Some may argue this to be progressive house, but I call it tech - in this age where labeling of music is so prevalent, I say we call a truce and just call is good music.
If this release is any indication of this duo's abilities as musicians, I would go out on a limb to say that we can expect to be hearing a lot more from the both of them. They've got my ears, that's for sure.
