Behrouz - Nervous Nitelife: Pure Behrouz NYC (Nervous Records)
Release Date: October 7th, 2008
Reviewed: 5/5

San Francisco’s world renowned DJ and Producer, Behrouz teams up with legendary New York label, Nervous Records to bring us “Pure Behrouz NYC,” an extraordinary double disc mix compilation with an eye on the past, present, and future of club music.

“Pure Behrouz NYC” drops a set of tunes masterfully pieced together; the way the tracks flow, blend and relate to each other is quite remarkable. The mixing is well thought out and perfectly executed, so smooth, subtle and progressive, the way it should be. Behrouz is taking us through different styles, but keeping particular types of sounds together in segments rather then quickly mixing from one style to the next with each new track.

Disc 1 begins with a classic segment, bringing several great piano and string led house tunes to the mix, very classy and lounge appropriate. The second half gains velocity with some excellent progressive builders, nice dubby, wash-over-you prog, suitably finishing off with some string led prog house. While disc 2, brings some bumpin and groovin tech house, sexy minimal prog, and other dope track selections. Absolutely def.

The best part is that it doesn’t feel canned or automated like many of the “DJ” mixes coming out these days. There’s a focus on including quality tracks rather than the most current, so in fitting with the compilation’s club music history concept, some more seasoned tunes have been selected. The occasional vocals involved here are decent, chilling, poetic, ethereal, and with perhaps one exception, not overbearing or super cliché.

With cuts from house, prog, and tech masters like Danny Tenaglia, Josh Wink, Aril Brikhana, Gui Boratto, Kiko Navarro, Luciano, Milton Jackson, Joris Voorn, Greogor Tresher, Samuel L Session, Rollo, and of course, Behrouz himself, this double disc set is packed with primo material and well worth the jing.
