Deep Blend - London Gates EP
(Kansak Recordings)
Release Date: October 8th, 2008
Reviewed: 4/5
User Rating: 3.8/5
UK’s Deep Blend and Kansak Recordings bring us the ”London Gates EP” three tech progressive tunes with plenty of quirk, cool grooves, appealing sound selection, and serious potential.
London Gates serves as an excellent example of a breakdown-free progressive structure; moving through several 16 bar phrases, each ensuing phrase introducing a new theme or element. The sound selection is nearly solid; cool dubby echoes, pop, clicks, and chopped up samples remain spaced out yet constant, while a dope, offbeat moogy lead arrangement fills in the middle and serves as a base for a layered three synth peak phrase. The only thing not sitting too well is just after the intro, when the overdriven e-guitar type synth comes in felling a little heavy-handed and later when it sort of clutters up the peak, but otherwise London Gates contains several preeminent ideas and some really appealing phrases.
Control Room is quite techy and features excellent syncopation with a tight rolling groove. Structurally, it’s not overly predictable and also sans breakdown. Deep Blend seems apt at keeping the elements varied from phrase to phrase, this is very percussive driven, yet incorporated into the mix is a cool mid-bass groove, but unfortunately again an odd synth arrangement is imposed on the peak.
On the contrary, Upside Down is a rather forgettable track with its predictable and simple eighth-note stabs plonking for one bar then up the scale for the next bar type arrangement sounding ubiquitous and unsatisfying. Still, Upside Down doesn’t really detract from the ingenuity (albeit conventionally framed) beheld of the previous two cuts in the pack, but rather affirms it like some satirical rendition of the eighth-note prog style.

"ENjoyed Upside down the most of this release. I dont know that I would classify this as progressive as much as i would a hybrid of progressive &minimal. It has classic minimal sounds with fair amount of progressive elements, that really gave me an opportunity to go between the 2 genres with this track. " - 3.5 / 5

"London Gates is hot stuff, nicely programmed drum sounds. Especially love that perc that sounds like a water drop, I would have never thought of that. I can see this one getting a lot of support from all types of DJs across the board. The other two releases are a bit weaker, but I'd have to say Upside Down is my next favorite." - 4.0 / 5
